Discover the Charm of Bernese Beauty
Our Bernese Mountain Dogs are a cross F1BB, Meaning they are a Majority Bernese Mountain Dog with a little bit of a poodle. There are a few reasons we do this:
- Stronger Bernese Mountain Dog Traits: With a much higher percentage of Bernese Mountain Dog genetics, these dogs are likely to strongly inherit the desirable characteristics of the Bernese:
- Temperament: They are likely to be very affectionate, loyal, gentle, and patient. Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for being wonderful family dogs, good with children, and often described as “goofy” and loving. This cross aims to retain that characteristic “Berner” personality.
- Appearance: They will likely have a strong resemblance to the Bernese Mountain Dog in terms of build, bone structure, and the classic tricolor coat (black, rust, and white markings).
- Calmness: Bernese Mountain Dogs tend to be more laid-back than Poodles, and this higher percentage can lean the offspring more towards a calm and docile energy level, while still retaining some of the Poodle’s playful spirit.
- Reduced Shedding (compared to pure Bernese): While not as guaranteed to be low-shedding as a higher Poodle percentage Bernedoodle (like an F1B at 75% Poodle), the 12.5% Poodle can still introduce the “furnishings” gene, which is responsible for the low-shedding, curly/wavy coat. This means there’s a higher chance of less shedding compared to a pure Bernese Mountain Dog, which sheds quite a bit. However, some puppies in this litter might still be “unfurnished” and shed more like a pure Bernese.
- Hybrid Vigor (Improved Health and Longevity): Like other mixed breeds, this cross benefits from “hybrid vigor.” By introducing genetic diversity from two distinct breeds, the offspring may have a lower risk of inheriting some of the breed-specific health issues common in purebred Bernese Mountain Dogs (such as certain cancers, hip and elbow dysplasia, and a shorter lifespan). Poodles are generally a long-lived breed, and introducing their genetics can potentially increase the lifespan of our Berners compared to a pure Bernese.
- Intelligence and Trainability: Poodles are highly intelligent and trainable dogs. Even with a smaller percentage, the Poodle influence can contribute to the offspring’s intelligence and eagerness to please, making them generally easier to train than some other breeds.
- Adaptability: Our Bernese are generally adaptable dogs that can do well in various living situations, provided they get sufficient exercise and mental stimulation.
